Cage Hoist: working principle & applications
A cage hoist is a temporary or semi-permanent goods hoist: a steel cage guided along a mast or tower is raised and lowered by a winch and wire rope. It is designed to move bricks, cement, tiles, drums and tools quickly between ground and working floors.
The structure is modular. Tower sections bolt together and are tied to the building at intervals, so the hoist can be erected quickly, extended as the building rises and dismantled when the job is finished. Cage and gate sizes can be changed to suit the material being lifted.
Safety follows the duty: a landing gate interlock prevents the cage moving with the gate open, an overload device protects the winch, and safety gear on the cage engages if a rope fails or speed becomes excessive. Operators run it from a protected control position.
Construction sites, under-construction buildings, godowns, hotels and industrial units.

Values are typical and customisable. Final capacity, speed, dimensions and finishes are confirmed after the site survey and approval drawing.
Safety is never optional
- Emergency stop
Mushroom-head emergency stop cuts power to the drive from the control station.
- Gate interlock & safety gear
The cage cannot move with the gate open, and safety gear stops it if a rope fails or speed becomes excessive.
- Limit switches
Upper and lower travel limits stop motion before the end of the stroke.
- Overload protection
Load-limiting device prevents lifting above rated capacity.
- Guarding & signage
Safety guards, rated-load plates and warning labels as per site requirement.
Questions we get asked
Can a cage hoist carry people?
No. A standard cage hoist is for material only. Passenger hoists require a different design and approvals.
How tall can the tower go?
Height depends on load and the number of building tie-ins. Typical site hoists go to 60 m; taller towers need engineering review.
Can it be moved between sites?
Yes. The tower and cage dismantle into sections for transport and can be re-erected at the next site.
