Product overview

Passenger Elevators: working principle & applications

A passenger elevator is a roped traction lift: the car and a counterweight hang on steel ropes over a traction sheave, so the motor only moves the difference between the two weights. This is why a modern gearless machine can carry a full car quietly while drawing very little power.

Our passenger range is built around a permanent-magnet gearless machine controlled by a variable-voltage, variable-frequency (VVVF) drive. The drive ramps speed up and down continuously, giving a comfortable start, a near-silent run and landing accuracy within ±5 mm — the points a passenger actually notices.

Cars are configured around the building: capacity from 4 to 20+ persons, speeds from 0.5 to 2.5 m/s, centre-opening or telescopic automatic doors, and cabin finishes from hairline stainless steel to mirror, glass and decorative laminates. Machine-room-less (MRL) layouts are available where the structure does not allow a separate machine room.

Ideal for

Apartments, housing societies, offices, hotels, showrooms and commercial complexes.

Key features

What you get

Smooth, quiet ride

VVVF drive with S-curve acceleration for comfortable starts, stops and a near-silent run.

Advanced safety systems

Governor safety gear, overload sensor, door interlocks and ARD as standard.

Low power consumption

Gearless permanent-magnet motor and LED lighting cut running cost; standby mode saves energy when idle.

Precision levelling

Landing accuracy within ±5 mm, so there is no step between car and floor.

Automatic doors

Centre-opening or telescopic doors with sensor edge protection for safe boarding.

Smart controls

Microprocessor group control, destination-ready options and clear LED indicators.

Safety & standard compliance

Safety is never optional

  • Governor & safety gear

Over-speed governor with progressive safety gear stops the car on the guide rails if it exceeds rated speed.

  • Overload sensor

Load-weighing device prevents departure and sounds a buzzer when the rated load is exceeded.

  • Interlocked doors

Landing doors are mechanically and electrically interlocked, so the car cannot move with any door open.

  • Emergency alarm & lighting

Battery-backed alarm bell and emergency light keep users reassured and visible during a power cut.

  • Final limit & buffers

Terminal slowdown, final limit switches and oil or spring buffers protect the pit and overhead.

  • Automatic Rescue Device (ARD)

On mains failure the ARD brings the car to the nearest landing at low speed and opens the doors.

Passenger Elevators

Questions we get asked

What capacity passenger elevator do I need?

Capacity follows building type and peak footfall. Residential buildings usually run 6–13 persons; offices, hotels and showrooms often need more. Our engineer calculates this during the free site survey.

Can a passenger lift be installed in an existing building?

Yes. Lifts are regularly retrofitted into existing apartment blocks and offices. The survey confirms shaft, pit and headroom before any civil work is quoted.

How noisy is a passenger elevator?

Gearless traction drives run near-silently; most users notice the doors more than the motor.
